How a dark brunette gets Manic Panic color without bleaching

by Jennie Harris from Louisiana, USA on 2010-08-20
I ordered Cotton Candy Pink a while back from Amazon, however I normally use Passion Red, Hot Hot Pink, or After Midnight Blue (once). I dye my naturally brown hair with Manic Panic dyes only because they are semi-permanent.In order to get the color, I wash my hair using a harsh dish washing soap like Ajax or regular soap like a Dial bar twice to strip it. No conditioner. I then dry my hair on high and straighten it on high without heat protector. Why? To get it as DRY as possible without straight up burning it. Any products will block the dye. Don't worry, Manic Panic dyes will rehydrate your hair. I then take my dye of choice (Passion Red is my favorite, it fades nice!) and cover my hair fully with dye, applying it thickly so it has a lot to soak up. 9+ inch thick/12+ inch thin hair may need more than one jar for the right affect. (I have very thick hair and when I started dying it reached my lower back! Two jars!)Leave the dye in at least 9 hours, preferably 12 depending on color. More than 12 may be the best thing to do, but the dye is harder to was out after 12 hours. These dyes are free of harsh chemicals so they are safe for you to leave in. I usually do this at like 7 PM, then cover my hair with a shower cap to sleep.Another tip I read from the Manic Panic website is using the hair drying for 5 minutes every hour or so (before I go to bed.) The heat is supposed to help. When you wash your hair for the first time, try to use cool water. Don't use shampoo the first wash. You can use conditioner after you have washed your roots good! I find that leaving it in so long means I spend a while getting the excess out.Remember, an unnatural color on natural hair is not going to last as long as it would on bleached hair. After the second wash it begins to fade. The longer you left the dye in, the less it will fade between washes. I try to go 2-3 days without washing it the first two weeks to keep it longer.Tips for not dying your face, bedding, etc.: * I purchased a cream from Sally's that claimed to protect your skin from dyes. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't(?), but it was cheap ($2) so not a complete waste if your forehead may not be pink for 2 days. * In case it leaks from the cap while sleeping, place a dark towel on your pillow or buy a dark case. * When you wash your hair there may be some residue left after the first wash and when you towel dry it you find your nice white towels are now pink! If bleach within an hour it should save the towel, but after that it's ruined. My Individual Color Experiences: * Cotton Candy Pink did not turn out well. It is a light color and will best be achieved in bleach hair, I think. I left it in 12 hours. Don't follow my instructions and use this color if you're a brunette, it's tacky. : And it faded fast!* Passion Red has had the best results for getting the right color and lasting. I left it in 12 hours. It also fades to a natural looking red color on brunettes before finally returning me to my roots! Last day of red was about 3 weeks later.* Hot Hot Pink did not get completely the right shade, as should be expected with a pink in brown hair. I left it in only 9-10 hours though. It was a pretty pink and lasted as long as Passion Red.* After Midnight Blue was gorgeous! Lasted weeks! And your brown hair is permanently green afterwords. Lol. I'm so glad I only streaked it in two places. I think I only left the dye in for 5 hours? But it's been a while back. A year later and a new hair cut, I no longer am asked randomly when standing in the sun, "Hey, Wait... did you dye your hair green?"Hope this helps!

First I'm pretty sure I already wrote a review for this. Second I had to buy the bleach for it to even work even though i have dark blond hair. Third after two weeks the color washed out and it isn't even noticeable. Don't waste your money on it use a different brand.

My hair was a light auburn colour, all this dye did was turn it dark brown.. I at least expected it to show a little cause my hair was pretty light. Nothing! Two hours I left it in. I might make one more attempt.

This stuff is great

by Amazon.com-lover from California on 2009-12-20
I love it! I put some bleach streaks in my hair and then painted on the Manic Panic, let it sit for an hour, washed it out,and I have these dark pink highlights that look really great, especially in the sunlight. Everyone tells me how much they like it! I love that the product is vegan! I did have to delete one star tho, because the stuff is a mess. Bathtub is now pink, and I am a renter... and when I go to the gym and sweat on the treadmill, I am not at my most attractive, what with pink streaks going down my face and neck...Yikes it bleeds out forever! BUT I love the look and I now want to try other colors. In case anyone is wondering, I am over 30,and I think these fun colors are adorable no matter my age!

True to Color

by C. Tim from Philadelphia, PA on 2010-09-04
I really like this brand. I have tried other brands and they turned my hair crazy colors. This brand is true to color and last a very long time. It does run in the shower and sometimes stains my pillows but that doesnt bother me (get darker pillowcase). I still use this brand and will continue to do so.

I have been using the Jerome Russell Punky COlor for years now and I have not found anything that even compares to the intensity and depth of the color. I have been a colorist for 10 years now, and this is one of my favorite tools to use!

Great buy!

by Me from on 2010-07-29
I bought this on an impulse and I'm so glad I did. The colour is soooo pretty, but I had to bleach my hair first because it didn't rly show up on my brown hair. I get tons of compliments on the colour and it even looks good when fading (it lasts a few weeks b4 actually fading). This colour when used on alot of hair does come out for a few days when wet, it does get messy but its totally worth it! I will definately buy again and try new colours!

My Favorite Pink

by R. Miller from Charlotte, NC on 2010-08-20
I used to use Flamingo Pink back in the '90s when it was distributed by Manic Panic. I'm not sure how Jerome Russell became owner of it but it is still fantastic and my favorite pink dye.The color starts out a very dark pink and gradually lightens as you wash it. Always wash your hair in cold water so the color will several last weeks and stay vibrant. Of course the color shows up more intense if you bleach your hair before applying.

Beautiful bright vibrant pink

by Barbara from on 2009-05-19
I used this on my daughter she loves being a little different and hey why can't we all have fun, She previously had candy pink by RAW, it lasted over a month no lie. I used this to freshen up the pink, initially it is really more a red than a pink but after a couple of washes her hair is a beautiful, vibrant, bright pink, and a color as dramatic as she is. Its a perfect pink and a wonderful compliment to her tan complexion.

I'm so happy

A year later and a new hair cut, I no longer am asked randomly when standing in the sun, "Hey, Wait... did you dye your hair green?"Hope this helps!

hair dye

First I'm pretty sure I already wrote a review for this. Second I had to buy the bleach for it to even work even though i have dark blond hair. Third after two weeks the color washed out and it isn't even noticeable. Don't waste your money on it use a different brand.

good but doesnt last long

by J. Harr from baltimore on 2010-07-16
its really bright, had to bleach my hair first cause its dark, and it looked great the first couple of days, but quickly faded once I had to wash my hair.

Ultra Violet.

by kelsey Larsen from Fall City, WASHINGTON, US on 2010-06-18
My hair was a light auburn colour, all this dye did was turn it dark brown..

Great, long-lasting color!

by Sophia Baldonado from LOS LUNAS, NM, US on 2010-07-29
I've been using these Jerome Russell Punky Colour products for almost three years now and I only have good things to say about them! I've used the red, pink, and now the plum colors and they are all very vibrant and long-lasting. I tried the pink manic panic when I ran out of this and was very disappointed; it looked good but didn't last half as long! They are pretty messy but as long as you clean your tub right after you dye your hair and use shampoo or some nail polish remover to get the dye off your skin its not too much of a problem. I would recommend these to anyone daring enough to try the crazy colors!

My absolute favorite purple hair dye

by wiseblueberry from North Carolina, USA on 2010-07-21
I've had my hair a multitude of different colors over the years, and my favorite was always this color. I was so sad when my local beauty supply chain stopped carrying this line (back when it was still in a squeeze tube). I'm so excited that it's available relatively inexpensively online, as I've just recently gone back to purple (it was always my color :-P)

Great product!

by V. Hunter from Deer Park, WA USA on 2010-03-11
I agree with the other reviewer who said this color is more of a true purple than the others in the purple spectrum of this line. I have tried the Purple and Violet colors as well, and it is actually a toss up between the Plum and Violet for me as to which color I like best. The Violet kind of gives you a color changing effect...in low light the strands look more royal blue but out in the sun you get the purple effect.I took the advice in that same review to buy the L'anza trauma treatment product and the combination seems to be working very well. I'm over a week out and the plum color still looks great (in the past, I've had to touch up on a weekly basis to keep it from looking faded).I also agree about the color getting everywhere, even if you are careful. Plastic gloves are an absolute must! You will need to be prepared to clean your tub or whatever you use to rinse the color out in when you are finished. Now, I personally am still getting purple suds when I wash my hair, even after a week of shampooing every other day, but not bad enough to stain anything at this point...at least I don't think so. However, I tend to wear darker clothes so maybe that's the reason I haven't noticed any staining. I would certainly be careful long term with any lighter shirts, towels, pillow cases, hats, etc.Now all that being said, I once again will have to agree with the other reviewer...it is definitely worth the work, extra effort and care. I love the color and am complimented all the time on my funky, punky purple strands. I will be keeping them regardless of the up-keep needed!

AMAZING! Wont use anything else

by manda from on 2009-12-29
I absolutly love this stuff. The plum made my hair a beautiful shade of purple that i was constatnly complimented on. The dye also smells delicious, like grapes or something.Only negative thing i have to say about it is that it stained my bathtub..pillows..and boyfriends arm. But it took forever to fade in my hair. I wont use anything else ever again

BEST COLOR EVER!

by Chelsey Christensen from Costa Mesa, CA on 2009-01-24
I've been dying my hair different colors for 6 years or so and this is by far my favorite color. Punky Colours stays in the longest out of any other brand of semi permanent hair dye I've used. It stays in for about a month but even then, it fades to a nice light purple. As long as you bleach your hair to almost white you shouldn't see any blue. And yes, like the other person said, purple turns a pink/purple, and violet turns a blue/purple, plum is just purple. So if you're going for purple this is the best choice.
