I used this product once and it will be the last. The good thing about this product is that it doesn't have an odor and it did color my grey. However, the covered over grey came out pretty reddish at first (along with my scalp), but then the hair started to take on a shade of pink and then purple. For the hair that wasn't originally grey, the color was too dark and very flat / no sheen. I have colored my hair with true henna powder several times and got much better results. I will not buy this product again.

Best Henna ever!

I have used hennas in the past, and I've also used the commercial dyes. Surya's product was so easy to use. No mixing, it didn't have that earthy smell like other hennas, NOR did it have that awful pungent smell of commercial / chemical dyes. It was very easy to apply, no parting necessary. It went on smoothly, and there was enough for even long-haired people. It also rinsed out easily and my hair was sooooo soft afterwards (unlike the commercial / chemical dyes). I read one review that mentioned it stained their pillowcase (she used the dark brown and not sure how well she rinsed), but I have not experienced that. I would HIGHLY recommend this to anyone interested in coloring at home!

Things are not what they seem

I tried this "henna" b/c I get dizzy with any type of hair coloring. The chemicals and me just don't agree. This chocolate cream made me have the same reaction so of course I had to rinse it quickly and for a long time. As you know this take forever. Now that my hair is dry... the grey is yellow. Excellent product and alternative to chemical processing. I have dark dark brown hair. I have tried regular henna before but it made my hair very red. This product is still mostly henna and applies the same way but is a good match for my dark brown hair. Definitely let the product sit for 3 hours after mixing and I definitely leave it on for an hour. It is great!! And I love that its all natural and never animal tested. Imagine the chemicals from regular hair dyes being put on little helpless rabbits and feel good that you no longer support such torture.Thanks!!

Works perfectly and better than chemical hair dyes do. I used this on my sister and her gray turned blueish green for the first few hours and she woke with beautiful dark brown hair! She (we) could not ask for a better product. If you follow the directions they would have known this and more than likely felt like an A** when they woke with brown hair. You have a customer for life and all of Harvest Moon products are awesome. I recommend all of Harvest Moon Shampoos as well.I also want to point out we did not have to boil, cut, chop,boil tea, make coffee or microwave the henna prior. We also did not have to have to let the hair dye sit on the counter for 24 hours before using it. We just added water and applied. Super easy!

Turns gray hair bluish

I have dark brown hair with some gray. Followed the instructions to the letter. My gray hairs are now blue. This product is a blend of henna and indigo with some other herbals. The henna dye apparently takes longer to activate than the indigo so by applying the mixture as soon as it is mixed with water, the indigo is the only dye that affixed to my hair.

I tried this along with the gray treatment prior to coloring and after hours of goop and following the steps I ended up with orange where the gray hair was and almost blue everywhere else. The best part? My hair still smells like spinach and weed had a baby and it pooped on my hair.

BEWARE - Light Mountain Color the Gray doesn't work

I have been using Light Mountain Color the Gray, light brown henna for about 7 years and was very pleased with the results. It was a great product and worked great on my hair. Unfortunately this is no longer true. The last 3 boxes that I have used have been a big disappointment. The henna used to be a coarsely ground product but now it is a powder. The instructions have changed drastically making the process extremely time consuming. And worst of all, step 2 which used to impart a nice brown color doesn't work at all. Therefore my long hair ends up being a bright orange color due to the step 1 process. I am extremely disappointed in the changes that have been made to this henna. I did call the company and they were going to check into the problem and call me back the following day. That was 6 weeks ago and I am still waiting for their call.

Worth the Results sans Harsh Chemicals

Messy application, though this does improve with practice. Definitely an organic odor that lingers on my thick, medium length hair for about a week. Does cover my gray quite well, though I've learned to leave the product in my hair for the maximum suggested time. I've read reviews (in light brown) where others leave the product on for a very short time, I'm sure this differs person to person. This is a two step process, step one turns your gray a pinky/orange hue preping them for step two. For my hair, processing for step one is approximately 20 minutes while prep time/curing is about an hour. Step two is your color, for me processing time is 3 hours and prior to that an additional 3 hours to cure. Directions do warn against using any metal and recommend distilled water only. Since product is going on my hair, I've never gone against these warnings for fear of the possible consequences.All in all, I love the results and deal with the lengthy/messy application, super long prep/curing time as well as the processing time on my head, not to mention the lengthy time it takes to remove the product from my hair. After all of the grit is gone from my hair (typically about two shampoos or about 4 days for me) my hair is left feeling soft and shiny. My hair does also have a natural tendency to go red so I'm real careful not to add any other red enhancers listed as options in the instructions. I've yet to do so, but next application will add day old coffee to add more deep brown hues (as per options listed on the instructions).If there were another product out there offering the same results without the hassle, I would be all for it. Until then, I'll stick with Light Mountain. Four stars for great results and no harsh chemicals, but not hassle free.

Lots of work

First off, set aside a few hours to use the product the first time out. You definitely need to do the color swatch and check to see if you might have an allergic reaction to this product. This is a plant product and may cause dermatitis. I, luckily, did not. Secondly, it's messy and time consuming. On the positive side, the color comes out beautifully and your hair feels so incredibly good. Also it smells like henna. I love that smell. I bought the double pack and it's been almost 4 weeks and I've still got good coverage. I'm definitely going to do my hair again. If you like quick and convenient this product is not for you, that is why I gave it four stars. However, it is far safer and cheaper than most home hair coloring products. If you are looking to save a bundle on hair coloring and want a safe and natural way to cover the gray, this is a great product. I think the second time I use this product it will be easier and a little quicker as I know how long to keep the product on my hair.

The July 12, 2010 review by Francois Arouet is complete hogwash. Using light brown touch of gray on graying brown hair and leaving it on for only a few minutes fools everyone, even family. No one can tell. Your hair will look great and there is no--- I repeat no purple hue to it.

Puple is NOT "dark Brown"

I really find it hard for believe these positive reviews are written by anyone other then PR shills a/k/a spin doctors. They all read like ad copy.First, BEWARE! Obviously what you see in commercial ads is the result of SKILLED PROFESSIONALS.Second the colors are very unnatural looking I am now able to spot a user of this product from 50 ft away. Very phony looking colors. I tried both the black and, a few months later the dark drown. Neither look like anything that could possibly grow out of a human head. Both have a definite purple/maroon/bluish tint to them. They all leave the mark of a cheap kitchen sink dye job. Colors are dull, mat, lifeless and covered over all the wonderful natural shine may hair already had. "Black"? "Dark Brown"? - better names would be 'mud', 'swamp water brown' or 'crude oil black.'Third, proper application requires professional skill. The applicator comb is a gimmick that deposits globs of product unevenly spread. There is no room for error with this product. Unless you are looking for a phony paint job go find a skilled professional or live with what you have - which, after all, IS natural and NEVER looks phoney. People just don't grow purplish hair!

I have light red hair. Tried the light brown. Works amazing. Make sure to only leave it in for 3-5 min then washout. Also, if you want to get the best affect wash your hair well and let it dry before applying.

Potentially hazardous chemicals

I was thinking of trying this product until I saw that the Environmental Working Group gave it a "High Hazard" score due to potential health risks. Several ingredients are linked to cancer, neurotoxicity, allergy, and other health issues. The product was okay, but takes a bit longer then I like to get it the gray covered. It also sometimes pulls your hair, because the lipstick like color is very hard not like lipstick, but all in all it helps.

I saw this product on Dr Oz, then read alot of the reviews. It is one of the best investments ever! I went with a darker color (as recommended by a user) and when it covers the grey it does lighten up to my current color. There is a fragrance to it (a reviewer thought it was repulsive), its not a bad or offensive fragrance and doesn't linger. I cannot recommend this enough! As I applied it, all I kept saying was "OMG!!!!"

This is a great product. It works on both hair and beard. Several touchup applications can be made with a single package.Previously the kit contained a real good application brush but not anymore. If the kit had the brush I would have rated the product higher.Autoship on multiple packages is great. Effective, convenient to purchase, and a better price than on sale at the local store.
