Due to medical advances there are a lot of positive changes that regularly occur in the medical field. Advances in understanding and curing disease has this civilization to an advanced stage and therefore increasing the life expectancy of people with affordable healthcare. However, there are some advances that push the boundaries of ethics and morality as cloning and some aspects of stem cell research.

In recent news, researchers have found a way of allowing women undergoing in vitro fertilization to choose the specific features of their baby, such as body type, ability to fight disease and aptitude for the sport. This kind of test is possible by our understanding of genetic mapping. Designer babies therefore refer to a baby whose genetic makeup, such as intelligence and skin color is chosen in order to eliminate a certain hereditary diseases or defects and to ensure that a gene expectation arises. There are positive and negative uses of this type of examination.

One of the top available testing is called preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) was developed to prevent births with severe disorders (genetic or natural). This process involves looking at one or two cells of the embryo to detect anomalies. Based on the results of this test, the embryo is placed in the mother for labor, donated by research or, if considered abnormal, destroyed. Researchers have developed a method known as karyomapping comparing the genes of parents to test the embryo up to 15 000 genetic disorders. This makes it possible for parents with a history of genetic disorders such as cancer and cellular enemie, not to pass it on to their babies. Together with the detection of genes for these genetic disorders, PGD can also search for genes that are associated with increased risk of cancer and Alzheimer's disease. This process of detecting disorders is a positive step for science and allows us to have the option of detection of a healthy baby.

The downside of this is that detection features, addition of chromosomes that are predisposed to cancer, which are the chromosomes that determine physical traits such as athletics, perfect vision, the Hair color and texture, sex, resistance to addictive behavior, body type and skin color. These features do not affect the baby's health, but can still be predetermined also be revised. There were strong protests against the election of traits such as skin and hair color in a baby when this was announced to the public and Pope Benedict XVI condemned the "obsessive search for the perfect child." This selection of physical and social traits of the baby is unethical to some.

Right now there is not much regulation to create these so-called designer babies, because the selection procedures are new and in development. However, the regulations should be put in place to ensure that evidence of genetic disorders and diseases while allowing the choice of the physical features are limitless. If regulations are not instead, as our understanding of genetic mapping grows, we may be able to manipulate every aspect of a child before birth.
