Is it safe to have a root touch-up (color) on my hair, I'm only 5 1/2 wks pregnant?
Is this harmful to my pregnancy at this early stage??
Color away. As long as you aren't locked in a closet doing it, then you're fine. I think it's crazy when people say "the chemicals can seep into your pores, enter your blood stream, go into the placenta and attack your unborn baby". If that were the case, then NOBODY should be dying their hair, pregnant or not....LOL.
I am currently 18 weeks pregnant with my second and have dyed my hair twice now (the 2nd time being yesterday). And this baby was up and kicking this morning.. 
And all ultrasounds and heartbeat have been great!
Tips for having better colors
You have to take some precautions before color your hair. Rub Vaseline around your forehead and back hair line. This will help you from any mark that can cause on your skin. It is a protective measure. Even if color creates a mark on your face or skin then wipe off the mark with some cream cleanser and cotton. Wear gloves and place a towel on your shoulders. Towel would be old and dark colored. Stained skin can also be cleaned by alcohol. Do rinse your eyes if you get color in your eyes.
Coloring hair is more demanding because of grey hair. People want to color their hair. It covers grey hair as well as adds an extra styling sense. But beauty experts suggest that, if you have not more grey hair then go for some mild semi permanent hair color because it is not a permanent hair color. You should pot for a color that is little bit lighter than your normal hair color. You can also choose a color that matches exactly with your actual hair color. But if you have grey hair more than normal then you should try a permanent hair color. You can make your hair look like blonde or you can make it dark. Using black hair color for covering grey hair is also a good potion. Permanent hair colors are the best use for hiding grey hairs.
Permanent and semi permanent hair color can also be fixing up. There are lots of chances that you do not like the color after finishing the process. It can appear something that you don’t like, and then don’t be afraid. Consult with your hair expert and he will surely give you some tips how to fix the color. Semi permanent hair color can be removed by two three wash or shampooing. Permanent hair color can be removed by ‘ammonium laurel sulfate’ based shampoo.
For after care you need to use a shampoo and conditioner that is exclusively made for colored hair. This type of shampoo and conditioner will protect your hair and color and color will have a long life. Temporary hair color gets faded more easily so they need a touch up more frequently than a permanent hair color. Regular touch up and cleansing with above mentioned shampoo are must to protect your hair color. As for grey hair it depends on the individual hair growth. If your hair grows faster then you should need a touch up once in 20 days. Redo your hair color if you want to before grey hair is seen.
Always keep in mind that you and your hair expert have to be sure about the desired look and hair color that it will appear after coloring. Do a patch test before applying the final color. Highlights and lowlights look better on normal hair not on wholly colored hair. So remember this. Thus by taking proper care before coloring your hair you are taking the best steps towards having a proper and safer hair color.
