How long does it take for hair colouring?

I want to dye my hair a reddish colour and I want to know how long it usually takes for the stuff to stay in.. Do I wash it in or brush it in and how long afterwards can I take a shower?
im going to walmart for the hair colour. not a salon, it costs too much

it's usually 30 to 45 minutes.

Whilst it might be awkward to arrange frequent patch tests, a salon that takes the time to do so is implementing its duty of care.
